Warning: Txts may b used against u

You may think when you delete your text from your phone that it's gone - but moves are under way to force telcos to keep texts for up to a year.

That would make the texts searchable by police, divorce lawyers and even other members of the public, using the Official Information Act and other laws.

Leading the charge to keep texts stored is the Office of the Ombudsman, which is receiving complaints from people wanting government bureaucrats to release details of texts used by their departments.

Deputy Ombudsman Leo Donnelly said the public's right to know about decisions and actions undertaken by government workers via text messaging was going to be a "growing issue".

Police are also pressing for telecommunication companies to be forced to store texts for longer.
